Western Humanities Review accepts unsolicited submissions of original poetry, fiction, nonfiction, hybrid work, audio/visual work, and essays year round. We recommend reading an issue or two before you submit your work—subscribe today or browse some samples online. We only consider unpublished work. Because of the volume of submissions we receive, we are not able to provide individual feedback and are only able to publish about 2% of them—so please send us your best work. We’re looking for dynamic writing that engages, surprises, and moves us, work that is, in fact, out to get us.
Simultaneous submissions are allowed, but we ask that you please withdraw your work from consideration immediately if it has been accepted elsewhere. If you have individual poems that have accepted elsewhere from a packet you want to keep under consideration, you must email our managing editor directly at ManagingEditor.WHR@gmail.com. about the poems that have become unavailable. We are not able to see notes that you enter in Submittable.
All work must be submitted via our online submission system, Submittable. We do not accept submissions via email or snail mail.
Every submission is read & considered, but please understand we are experiencing ongoing, lengthy delays due to the global pandemic. You will not hear from us during the review process, and due the volume of email and submissions we receive, we do not respond to submission inquiries. Submit only one essay or story, or several shorter pieces (do not exceed 25 pages). Any multiple prose pieces should be combined into a single document.
Submissions should include a cover letter (space provided in the online submission form).
The title of the document file should read "Last Name_First Name_Prose Submission".
Poetry submissions should include a cover letter and up to five poems combined into a single document.
Your document title should read: "Last Name_First Name_Poetry Submission".

500-800 words
Books must be forthcoming or published in the last 6-12 months.
We are especially interested in reviews of books from small press publishers.

Please submit 6-8 images in a single .zip file and include a brief bio in your cover letter.
We accept only originals or high-quality copies or scans. No slides. Each piece must be saved as a separate .JPEG file no larger than 6 x 9 inches and at a resolution of 600 dpi for line art and 300 dpi for all others.
If your piece is chosen for the cover, you may be contacted for a larger file. Submissions which do not adhere to the above guidelines will not be considered. Please query with questions or for alternate submission method.
